What does a guitar setup include?

A setup may include thorough cleaning, neck/fretboard care, installation of new strings, neck-relief adjustment, saddle and bridge-height adjustment, pickup-height balancing, intonation correction, checking contacts and electronics, action adjustment and fret leveling where required.

The precise work depends on the instrument. After a properly performed setup, the guitar should be more comfortable to play and more accurate across the fretboard.

How often?

The original service page recommends periodic setup roughly every 6–8 months, particularly because changes in temperature and humidity can affect wood, neck relief and setup stability. Actual frequency depends on the instrument, use and storage conditions.

Playability and action

Neck relief, saddle height, bridge height and action are adjusted to achieve comfortable playing while maintaining clean notes and stable intonation.

Strings, electronics and frets

String replacement, cleaning, lubrication/care, pickup-height checks, electronics inspection and assessment of fret wear are part of the overall setup process when appropriate.
